Seeing through your hands
The Rotary e-Club Agàpe Universale of Rotary International District 2050, in harmony with its motto “You shall love your neighbor as yourself“, has been committed since its foundation to serving the most vulnerable in our communities, particularly people with disabilities. In doing so, it helps spread a message of hope and peace among all peoples of the earth, in the spirit of the great global humanitarian Association to which it belongs.
With this premise, we organized this Accessible Tactile Sculpture Project in support of people living with disabilities, aimed at collecting, exhibiting, and auctioning works to be “seen through touch”, created by artists who willingly donated them for this cause.
The tactile sensation allows those who are blind or visually impaired to “see through their hands”, conveying not only shapes but also emotions. However, these same emotions can also be experienced by those fortunate enough to see, allowing them to better connect with the soul of the sculpture—something that is no longer permitted in public exhibitions and museums.
With these goals in mind, 50 Artists from all over Italy joined the initiative, creating and sending at their own expense “tactile works” of sculpture, painting, and jewelry with a great spirit of altruism and solidarity.
These creations were exhibited to the public at the Francesco Gonzaga Diocesan Museum in Mantua (MN). Subsequently, in conjunction with the 37th District 2050 Conference of Rotary International, selected works were sold at auction in the Cavallerizza Hall of the Vigevano Castle.
The net proceeds were donated in part to a young man from Mantua with cognitive disabilities who is exceptionally talented in aquatic disciplines, while another part was donated to Trattoria Isidora in Mantua, a Social Promotion Association fully dedicated to introducing youth with disabilities into the world of work and sports.
Because the true strength of a society is measured by its ability to walk together. Always. Leaving no one behind.
