THE SOUL OF AGÀPE

The Beating Heart of Our Commitment

The name of the Agàpe Universale e-Club is centered on the most important Biblical Commandment: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself“. This double pillar — loving God and neighbor — has sustained the Judeo-Christian ethics of the Western world for nearly two millennia.

At the end of the 19th century, Friedrich Nietzsche announced the “death of God”. In his most famous aphorism, a madman wanders by day with a lit lantern looking for God among the mocking crowd, then smashes the lamp and cries out: “we have killed him, God is dead and we have not realized it!” Even those who do not fond of Nietzsche have had to recognize him as a prophet. By “God” he means the inner metaphysical space, the focal point of moral action, hollowed out by positivism and the new scientism.

The fall of this first pillar dragged down with it, at the end of the 20th century, the crisis of the second as well: love for one’s neighbor. Our neighbor is not an abstract entity, it is the person we see and can touch. Today they are replaced by a media hologram, and the “you” we address to everyone conceals an unbridgeable distance. Once, the stranger enjoyed a privileged status; today they are viewed almost as an invader.

**Is it therefore time to think that our neighbor is dead too?** Our Club wants to embrace this question and contribute to spreading a message of **universal love**, drawing inspiration from the revolutionary gesture of Martin — a catechumen and Roman soldier, later a Saint — who gave half of his cloak to an unknown stranger. **That cloak is the symbol of solidarity without return**, except for the repayment of the “good debt”: the debt of love that everyone owes to others, for it is written: “**Owe no one anything, except to love each other**”.

Agàpe Universale is true Love, which can unite all peoples of the Earth in an embrace of peace.

WHY AN E-CLUB

We chose the web

A Rotary e-Club is a Club whose Members meet and connect via the Internet (email, videoconferencing, Skype, etc.).

This innovative type of Rotary Club was established by Rotary International in 2010 and, to date, already counts around 300 Clubs worldwide.

Rotary e-Clubs follow the same regulations established for all Rotary Clubs. The key difference is that an e-Club conducts its regular meetings on the Club’s website rather than meeting in person on a specific day and time; Members can therefore attend meetings at any time and day of the week.

Just like all Rotary Clubs, Rotary e-Clubs carry out service projects in local and international communities.

E-Club meetings take place on an exclusive website. The official meeting time is determined when the Club President or Secretary posts the discussion topic on the site. Members can then log on to the website at their convenience at any time, discussing the agenda items or other topics.

To respect the privacy of e-Club members, part of the meeting content or members’ personal data is protected through restricted access for members only.

Although all Rotary e-Clubs meet and conduct discussion activities predominantly online, they also have the opportunity to meet in person from time to time during the year, during the execution of projects and Rotary events.

Membership in a Rotary e-Club is by invitation; anyone interested in learning more about the Club, its values, and its activities can write to us, and we will be glad to get in touch to discuss your interest in Rotary.

When we change ourselves, we change our clubs and our districts. When we change our districts, we change the communities in which we operate. And when we change our communities, we create a lasting impact all over the world, in our communities, in each and every one of us.
